We’re beginning a series of profile pieces on the Federal Election candidates in Northwestern Alberta.

Chris Warkentin is once again the candidate for the Conservatives in Grande Prairie, he says he’s running in this election for “the next generation.”

“My upbringing was always to look forward with optimism towards the future. That was always the experience for people living in the Peace Country for the last 100 years is generation after generation did better and there was more opportunities. Quite frankly over the last decade, I’ve just seen those opportunities start to erode and those opportunities really have been undermined by this current Liberal government.”

Warkentin has a long history as an MP, he was first elected in 2006.

He says affordability has been a major concern that he’s heard from people.

“People have talked to me about the desire for their kids to be able to afford a home or those working even a couple of jobs not being able to pay the rent anymore because of the high cost of living and the escalating prices on so many goods. People are looking for an alternative.”

The Grande Prairie riding has seen some boundary changes, with High Level and other parts of the Mackenzie region being shifted into the Peace River-Westlock riding.
