Statement from Mayor Elaine Manzer on the passing of former Mayor Tom Tarpey:
“It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former Town of Peace River Mayor Tom Tarpey.
Tom served on Council for three terms, starting in 2010 as a Councillor and becoming Mayor in 2013, dedicating himself to the betterment of our community. During his time in office, he brought energy, a keen mind, thoughtfulness, and a deep commitment to public service.
His leadership helped shape our town during important years of growth and change, including the building of the Baytex Energy Centre and the challenges of the Covid years. The Neighbourhood Renewal Program, Telus Fibre Optic installation, and studies on water infrastructure and rates were some of the initiatives started during Tom’s years on Council and as Mayor. He was a consistent supporter of the arts and the Town’s mural program, personally sponsoring the mural located on the side of the Style Rite Cleaners building.
On behalf of Town Council, Administration, and the entire community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Tom’s family and loved ones, as well as his work colleagues at Mercer International – Peace River. We honour his contributions and his memory, and we are grateful for the years he gave to Peace River.”
– Mayor Elaine Manzer
Flags at Town facilities have been half-masted in his memory.
