Ice Jam Watch Lifted for Peace River, Freeze-Up Advisory Remains

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas has ended the Ice Jam Watch for the Peace River, covering the stretch from the Town of Peace River to the Highway 986 bridge.

According to the update, a secondary ice cover that had formed through the Town of Peace River broke up overnight between December 21 and December 22. The ice moved downstream and consolidated against the primary ice cover near Berreth Flats, approximately 20 kilometres downstream of the town. Officials confirmed that an ice jam did not form within the Town of Peace River as the ice cover collapsed and moved out.

While the ice jam threat has eased, a River Ice Advisory for freeze-up at the Town of Peace River remains in effect. River levels in the area are expected to begin rising today as an approaching ice front moves in. Freeze-up at the Town of Peace River is anticipated to occur between this evening (December 22) and tomorrow (December 23).

Officials are warning that the newly forming ice cover may be unstable. Water levels between the Town of Peace River and the Highway 986 bridge could fluctuate rapidly as ice continues to consolidate.

Historically, freeze-up conditions in the Town of Peace River typically result in water level rises of approximately 2.5 to 3.5 metres. Residents along the river are advised to remain alert and monitor conditions closely as freeze-up progresses.
