Alberta Justice says a second person has now been sentenced in connection with a 2023 church fire in Grouard that was ruled an arson.

Gerald Capot of High Prairie has been handed a one-year jail sentence, along with a one-year Conditional Sentence Order, following proceedings in Peace River court. Capot had previously pleaded guilty to arson involving property belonging to others.

The charges stem from a fire that destroyed the 121-year-old St. Bernard Catholic Church in Grouard on May 22, 2023.

Capot was arrested alongside Kenneth Ferguson, also of High Prairie. Ferguson had earlier pleaded guilty to break and enter to commit theft. He received a 90-day jail sentence, credited as time served, along with one year of probation.

The case marks the conclusion of sentencing in the incident that led to the loss of a historic community landmark.
