Separatist Questions Arise In Legislature

stock-legislature-jpg-2

Question period in the provincial legislature yesterday was dominated by the topic of Alberta separatism.

Several NDP MLA’s were peppering the UCP government with questions on that topic after an op-ed that was published on Friday by Jason Stephen, MLA for Red Deer- South and the province’s parliamentary secretary for constitutional affairs, saying quote “referendum on independence is good for Alberta”.

This has lead to calls from the NDP for the UCP to remove Stephen from their caucus.

Yesterday’s question period had several debates on separatism and the government caucus.

Peace River MLA Dan Williams, who’s also the Deputy Government House Leader, was front and centre in those debates, which you can see in the video below.

Meanwhile organizers behind a petition on Alberta independence believe they have gathered enough signatures to trigger a potential referendum.

According to multiple sources, canvassers with the Stay Free Alberta group were told last night the petition had reached the required threshold under Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act.
