  1. A 44 year-old man from Gift Lake is dead following a collision between an oil tanker and a pick-up, on Hwy 750, south of the Metis Settlement on Saturday.
    Police say he was ejected from the vehicle on impact and perished at the scene. The driver of the semi was treated and released from hospital.
    An oil spill occurred during the event, but was quickly contained and drained to another tanker.
  2. The town of Peace River is saving nearly $30,000 per year after an audit found the town was billed for streetlights that don’t exist.
    The savings come from a cross-reference of data in the town’s mapping system, compared to monthly billing records from ATCO Electric.
  3. The Holy Family Catholic Regional Division will be determining next steps regarding L’Ecole Providence in McLennan.
    The board of trustees are making decisions at a meeting today, regarding the school.
    A push for registration was made to see if growth in enrolment has occurred, which has been around three dozen students, the last couple of years.
  4. Roaming pets and unsightly premises are the focus of local enforcement in Grimshaw this Spring.
    Complaints and enforcement challenges have been filed into the town office, thus having Council put a bylaw into effect.
    Officials say as the snow melts, drive-by inspections and the issue of violation notices will be stepped up.
  5. The town of Grimshaw has adopted a Political Activity Restrictions Bylaw, which prohibits political activities at town-owned facilities and properties.
    Activities on the No-Go list include, campaigning, petitioning, distributing materials, and soliciting donations in areas including parks, roads, and buildings.
    However, activities like voting stations, private rentals with limited access, and all-candidate forums, can be exceptions to the rule.
  6. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals now have a majority government after winning the federal byelections in three ridings in Ontario and Quebec yesterday.
    The byelection wins along with some recent floor crossings gives the Liberals 174 of the 343 seats in the house.
    Most of those “floor crossers” did come from the Conservatives, and there are rumors that there could be more happening.
    Meanwhile, Carney has announced that the feds will temporarily suspend the federal fuel excise tax on gas and diesel starting next week.
  7. AJHL Playoffs tonight… Game 7 Grande Prairie is in Whitecourt. The winner plays Canmore in the League final.
  8. Four Canadian teams are in action, as part of a 9-game NHL schedule tonight.
    Colorado is in Calgary, LA’s in Vancouver, Montreal is in Philidelphia, and Winnipeg is in Utah. The 16 playoff teams have been determined, but not seedings, as of yet.
    Three Canadian teams will play next week in the playoffs. Edmonton, Montreal, and Ottawa.
  9. The banged-up Toronto Blue Jays begin a three-game set in Milwaukee tonight. Kevin Gausman starts for the Jays against Jacob Misiorowski.
  10. A mostly cloudy afternoon is in store in the Northwest, with the odd peek of sunshine thrown in.
    Highs are still above zero, with lows tonight being a little chilly, at between -5 and -10.
    Skies will clear out and digits will warm up by the weekend, possibly hitting 15 in the Peace and Big Lakes by Sunday.
