NDP Launches Campaign Against Separation

With the possibility looming of a separatist referendum in Alberta, the NDP has launched its own campaign to take action against that.

Party leader Naheed Nenshi says “For Alberta, For Canada” is a movement for anyone who wants to fight back against separatism.

“We’ve talked to a lot of folks who lived through Brexit in the UK and who worked on the referendums in Quebec 1980 and 1995 and what we really learned is that you can’t take anything for granted. We’re really giving Albertans an opportunity right now to get involved in the fight to save Canada.”

Nenshi says the campaign is designed to mobilize Albertans in every corner of the province.

“A lot of folks believe as I do that Canada is a big and complicated country and we don’t always get everything right and sometimes we get things pretty wrong, but generations of people have built one of the best places on earth and we’d rather be here than anywhere else. That’s part of being Canadian and that’s what we’re trying to tap into.”

The campaign will also have a province-wide door-knocking day of action on April 25, which Nenshi says aims to attract pro-Canadian Albertans beyond NDP voters.

Nenshi says even the threat of a referendum on separation can create uncertainty in Alberta’s economy.
