Alberta’s Open Farm Days Coming Up in August

The 5th Annual Alberta Open Farm Days is coming up on August 19 and 20, 2017.

“(Open Farm Days) highlights some of our most innovative producers and agribusinesses,” said Agriculture & Forestry Minister Oneil Carlier in a news release. “It offers Albertans a firsthand look at where and how our food is produced, and offers our agriculture sector an opportunity to promote the significant contribution it makes to our province.”

New this year, farm-to-table culinary events and open houses will also be held throughout the entire weekend.

“The popularity of (the event) demonstrates the appetite Albertans have for culinary tourism,” Culture & Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda said in the same news release. “(Albertans) learn more about rural life and discover the hidden gems this province has to offer.”

Last year’s Open Farm Days had 92 host farms and 26 culinary events, with more than 17,800 visits. In total, $134,280 in on-farm sales was made.

The deadline to apply to be a host farm is May 31. Anyone interested can fill out an online registration form.
