Residents of Peace River will soon be able to check in on certain crimes in their community.

The RCMP’s Crime Mapping application will be coming to the Town of Peace River’s website. The application will show on a map of the town where property crimes are happening.

Councilor Orren Ford says the map will include crimes reported within the last 14 days, and will not include severe crimes.

“You’ll be able to see where hot spots are as far as complaints, break ins, auto theft – that sort of crime,” says Ford. “It’ll give the community a chance to say ‘hey, this is my community, what do I need to do to protect my own household?”

The RCMP presented the Crime Mapping application to council at the Town’s last regular meeting, and at last night’s meeting, council agreed to have the application added to the Town’s website.

“From my understanding, the city of St. Albert has already rolled the program out and it’s working quite well,” says Ford.

While the map will provide residents with an idea on what types of crimes are happening locally, the locations you’ll see on the map won’t be plotted precisely, but rather, by general vicinity. Currently, there’s no exact date as to when the application will appear on the Town’s website.

The service comes with no cost to the Town.
