Everett’s Friday Five – Non-Traditional Christmas Songs

This weeks Friday 5 is taking a look at my Top 5 non-traditional Christmas songs. When it comes to non-traditional mine can be a little unconventional especially at on this list even some honorable mentions are way out there. I like unique original Christmas songs that tend to make me laugh if you can’t tell by the end of my list.

Honorable Mentions

  • “Penguin, James Penguin” – Brad Paisley
  • “Merry Christmas Strait To You” – George Strait
  • “Jingle Bombs” – Achmed (Jeff Dunham)

5. “My Christmas List” – Simple Plan

This song by Simple Plan that sadly many have forgotten is about the blatant commercialism of the holiday and the greed of people especially with the holiday. Rather than wanting things you need the songs explores wanting countless things a person truly doesn’t need and always wanting more than what they get.  I love the song despite the dated references to DVDs and Play Station 2.

4.  “The Night Santa Went Crazy” – Weird Al Yankovic

This is a Weird Al original song about Santa going absolutely nuts. The song is NOT a children’s song for sure. The album version sees Santa end up in Jail and the elves working for the post office whereas the original and later released “extra gory” version sees Santa get sniped and the elves end up in unemployment. It is an unconventional choice that is for sure.

3. “Ugly Christmas Sweater” – Nice Horse

This one is pure comedy from some hilarious Alberta girls. Nice Horse made an amazing Christmas song with hilarious hijinks that would come with a redneck style Christmas at a trailer park, even Die Hard, KFC and getting lit up like a Christmas tree are part of the song. These ladies have made one of my newer Christmas favourites.

2. “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” – Thurl Ravenscroft

The runner up is the original version of the song, though I really do enjoy Jim Carey’s version for How the Grinch Stole Christmas soundtrack. I mean never has a song encapsulated and led to the a new term for someone who doesn’t like Christmas replacing Scrooge in modern times and this song is a major reason why. The odd and strange lyrics are something that could only come from Dr. Seuss’ mind.

1.”Santa Drives a Pick Up” – Paul Gross

This is an odd one for most but it is my favourite song at Christmas. I do wish you could buy it or stream it for a Christmas playlist, but I am happy having it on YouTube.  The song about Santa driving a pick up truck due to the lack of snow is just hilarious but begs to wonder how he will get it oversees ? Maybe Christmas magic.  This is just an odd and unconventional song that stuck with me thanks to my love of Due South.
