Fairview’s Tyson Helgesen is now playing hockey in the minor pro ranks with the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL.

He joined the team after going to Mount Royal University and says he was able to work through the transition of turning pro.

“The big thing for me after juniors was getting bigger and stronger and I feel like when I went to school there for four years, I was kinda able to do that. I knew it was going to be a little bit of a rougher game obviously with fighting and bigger guys and higher skill level players. When I first got there in the spring, it took me a week or two to get adjusted to the style of play and I feel like I’ve fit in pretty good here.”

One of his teammates is his older bother Kenton Helgesen. Tyson says it’s a cool experience to be playing with his brother at this level.

“We always missed each other growing up by about a year or two and we got to play against each other one time in junior. Being able to play with him is honestly a dream come true. It’s pretty cool for both of us and our family as well to be able to play a pro hockey game with Kenton is super cool.”
