A Grade 11 student at Glenmary School recently won a very prestigious award.

Lakota Testawich was one of 12 students in the province to receive the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award from the Alberta School Boards Association which celebrates exceptional First Nations, Metis and Inuit students.

Testawich says he feels that the best way to strengthen indigenous culture is to have more involvement from young people.

“It’s really important to be involved it even being an indigenous person here in Northern Alberta. I feel like the culture is going to die eventually because not a lot of people are exploring it. If one person or more people get involved in it, the culture will be strong.”

Testawich says the close relationship he had with his father is a big motivation for him.

“He’s always wanted me to do something good with my life and be successful. My family is hard working and just having him there watching over me and helping me throughout my life in my younger years and showing me the ins and outs of life.”

Testawich says he was very “surprised and honoured” to be a winner of the award.
