Grimshaw Mayor Bob Regal says council wants to explore the possibility of bringing a small modular reactor to the region.
This is in alignment with the position taken by the Municipal District of Peace #135 at its meeting last year where it decided to support exploration.
“I think we have to be progressive enough to say ‘yes, we are willing to look at anything and everything,’” says Regal.
“I think we are.”
Regal adds that this is all exploratory at this point.
“To say it is going to come to fruition – it is way too early to even talk about that,” states Regal.
“However, I do think we have to be progressive enough to at least look at something like that”
The province signed a memorandum of understanding with Ontario, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan to study the use of small modular reactors.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board.
