High Level’s mayor says the town is considering taking a proactive approach to limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Crystal McAteer says council received a petition with over 1,000 signatures suggesting a mandatory mask bylaw.

“We were debating it and it will go to a first reading at the end of August,” says McAteer.

She added that people are noticing a lack of physical distancing when people come to shop in town.

“We have many people that are feeling that there is not a lot of social distancing when crowds come into high level to shop,” she explains.

“We have four First Nations communities that use our community has a shopping centre so we want to do our part in helping protect them.”

She also says she spoke to some business owners today who are for mandatory masks in indoors spaces.

“We have small spaces in our stores so social distancing is not always possible.”

The mayor also added that council is not considering making masks mandatory in outdoor spaces.

McAteer also took a few minutes to talk about the amount of current cases in the region and says government officials said they would let her know if there were more than two cases in the town.

“We have not spoken with Government of Alberta officials since the pandemic started.”
