According to Alberta Health Services, the emergency room at the High Prairie Health complex is open.
According to Mayor Brian Panasiuk, town council reached out to AHS to find out what is happening with the emergency department.
Panasiuk said he was told that the emergency room is open to walk-in patients but that EMS called are be rerouted to emergency rooms at surrounding facilities.
In a tweet, AHS says the acute care centre is under an outbreak with several positive COVID-19 cases and that some physicians and healthcare workers have to isolate.
AHS goes on to say that staff and doctors from nearby communities have been called in to help at the High Prairie emergency department.
The provincial health agency wants to stress to people in and around the Big Lakes region that emergency medical care is available for anyone who needs it.
AHS said the facility was closed last night temporarily as of 7 PM.
