Some provincial relief from the pressures of inflation could be coming from a bill currently in the legislature.

Matt Jones, the Minister of Affordability and Utilities, says there are a number of planned as part of the Inflation Relief Statutes Amendment Act.

“Our affordability action plan provides significant broad based relief for all Albertans. The average Albertan household will receive an estimated $900 in benefits and that includes up to $500 in electricity rebates, 13 cents per litre in savings on gas and diesel from January to June, natural gas price protection, and also the re-indexing of income taxes.”

Jones says they’re also targeting additional supports to seniors and families with children.

He also says there are measures in the bill covering electricity rates.

“We are very concerned about the prices that customers on the regulated rate option are about to face. What we’re doing there is we’re putting in a price ceiling of 13.5 cents a kilowatt hour over January, February and March. It’s going to essentially defer those electricity charges above that mark then spread them out over the lowers cost months of April forward.”

The bill also calls for the pausing of the collection of the full 13-cent provincial fuel tax on gasoline and diesel between January 1 and June 30, regardless of oil prices.
