The Trending 55 Newsroom had a chance this week to talk with the Speaker of the Alberta Legislature.

Nathan Cooper was on the Hot Seat and one topic we discussed with him is the legislature including American Sign Language interpretation as part of the daily routine.

“After I sort of, if you will, had my eyes opened to the nuances of the difference between closed captioning and ASL, I was happy to try to find resources and make a way to just find one other avenue that we can make our democracy a little bit more accessible to this very important community, the deaf and hard of hearing community.”

The legislature session will begin on February 22.

We also talked about what happens at the legislature when it isn’t in session.

“During the summertime, the legislature is one of the most visited tourist destinations that Edmonton has to offer. Right now during the winter, on the south legislative grounds there’s a great outdoor skating rink that’s open every night to 10 PM. You can come and skate right on the legislative grounds. It’s a bit of a hub of activity.”

You can hear the full discussion with Cooper below.
