A local politician is being critical of how the pandemic has been handled in Alberta.

The Trending 55 Newsroom spoke to Central Peace-Notley MLA Todd Loewen, who says he’s heard concerns from some unvaccinated healthcare workers who may end up losing their jobs.

“I think it’s a very poor time to start laying off healthcare workers that have worked diligently for the last 18 months during this pandemic without being vaccinated. At this point here, now the government seems to be willing to lay them all off because they’re not vaccinated. I think that’s not helpful for the capacity at hospitals, it’s not helpful to build trust with those workers and it’s not helpful for managing the pandemic.”

Loewen says one thing that the province has failed at during the pandemic is not getting any more capacity in the hospital system.

“Obviously with the pandemic going on, you would think the government, AHS and the Premier would be focused on building capacity. That hasn’t been happening. Obviously the problem with laying off healthcare workers, that’s not helpful either. I think there’s a lot of mistrust in the Premier right now and when it comes to leadership, there’s been a complete breakdown in leadership in this province.”
