Central Peace-Notley MLA, Todd Loewen is looking for ways to free up police resources.

Loewen recently introduced Motion 505 in the legislature which states, “Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly urge the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General to explore options to establish a voluntary civilian corps to assist law enforcement in Alberta.”

Loewen tells the Trending 55 Newsroom the motion in meant to create opportunities for community-minded residents to help with non-criminal type matters.

“Things like traffic control at events or emergencies like traffic accidents,” says Loewen. “They can patrol communities and if they see anything, they can call the police.”

Loewen adds that if communities are able to establish their own corps, they can help free up police resources.

“There is a wide range of things police to do that is not dealing with criminals that would free up their time to better serve Albertans as far as crime prevention and addressing crime itself,” explains Loewen.

He also points out that this is not opening the door to vigilante style crime fighting.

“This is not a militia, this is nothing to do with vigilantes or anything like that,” stresses Loewen.

“Any suggestion of that is just completely false.”

In closing, Loewen says this is a chance for people to get more involved in their communities.

“It gives an opportunity for people who truly care about police actions and crime to truly get involved ”
