I have been a fan of the Venom movies since the first one came out. I always thought it would be weird not having any ties to Spider-man but in the first two they somehow made it work and gave us some fun buddy action movies. Despite this one trying to do the same thing and having the pieces to be great, I always felt like something was off.
The movie starts with Eddie Brock and Venom in the MCU, like at the end of the last one. I thought this was going to be something amazing! Finally tying these characters together. Although this may be his “last Dance” maybe Venom would go on to be in the Spiderman movies…but nope! Within the first 5 minutes, they are yoinked back to their universe. Then they must escape the military and the symbiote hunters that are trying to track down Venom.
It’s a fun buddy romp as they are on their way to New York to escape authorities. Although I’m not too sure what the plan is when they get there. It seemed like maybe the writers had planned for there to be a web-slinger around but that was not the case. The movie felt like it was setting things up that had no follow-through. For things where they did the payoff was not great.
I’m not all negative about this movie we do get to see Venom transform into a fish, a horse, and a few other things, which is fun. The dynamic between the two was still fun to see on screen. The bombastic climax was also visually fun but lacking story-wise.
Overall I liked the other Venom movies more and this movie felt like it lacked a goal. It introduced a villain setting him up and ending a trilogy with a…bang? I had hoped for more out of this movie and ended up disappointed. If you’re still on the fence you can check out the trailer below.
