Over the weekend I saw Wicked, which is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on a book. Now I want to remind everyone that this is part 1 of 2. Basically, Act 1 of the play. I feel like they had been avoiding saying that in a lot of their messaging. No posters or trailers I’ve seen really made note of it but I think you should know what you’re getting into if you plan to watch it.
Like I said it is based on the musical so the songs are all here from Broadway. From the ever-popular…Popular to the more dramatic, Defying Gravity. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo did a fantastic job with the vocals and of course with their characters as well. In interviews, they had even mentioned that these characters are very near and dear to their heart so they wanted to make sure that they were done right. I had seen a performance of the musical done in Edmonton when I was younger so I’m somewhat familiar with the story and music but there are definitely bigger fans of it than I am. so I’m glad I was able to chat with some of them and even they agree that the film did justice to the musical and it’s original work.
Visually I think the movie looks great the sets and overall vibe of the school are so whimsical. Everyone’s costuming is done great as well. I think more people should have fun outfits as they did at Shiz Academy. It was such a fun world that I just wanted to go there. Which I think means it did its job well.
Overall I really enjoyed the movie. Some songs are getting added to my playlist. The world was visually memorable and of course the story is great which is what led to it getting its popularity in the first place. How did the Wicked Witch of the West become wicked? Of course, I’m still waiting for part 2 but we’ll get that eventually. In the meantime check out the trailer below if you’re still on the fence. Also, be warned it does kinda go over all the major plot points so if you want to be surprised maybe don’t.
