MP for Peace River, Arnold Viersen, has been appointed to the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

The Subcommittee studies and reports on matters referred to it by its parent committee or on topics the Subcommittee members choose to examine.

The most recent work by the Subcommittee has included: Impacts of COVID-19 on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery, Human Rights Situation of the Uyghurs and the Mandate of the Canadian ombudsperson for responsible enterprise.

“The Subcommittee on International Human Rights is different from most Parliamentary Committees and operates as a consensus committee. There is a focus on producing reports and recommendations supported by all parties. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in all parties to ensure that no person is subject to human rights abuses or exploitation.” -Arnold Viersen

“I’m honoured to take on this new role. Every person has God-given inherent and inalienable rights and we must ensure they are protected and upheld,” says Viersen. “I plan to advocate for a particular focus on modern slavery, child exploitation and religious persecution.”

Previously from 2015-2021, Viersen was a Member of the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

The Subcommittee is expected to hold its first meetings in February.
