Two northwestern Alberta communities now have one more doctor in their towns and another is making sure their community gets healthcare coverage while a doctor is out of the area.

Residents of Fairview now have improved access to care with a new family physician practising.

Dr. Ahmed Betelafia will be providing care at the Fairview Health Complex and practising out of the Fairview Medical Clinic.

He joins Dr. Harley (Bob) Irvine, Dr. Sally Andreiuk and Dr. Mohamed Elgaoud as the fourth physician in Fairview.

One more family physician is expected to begin practising in Fairview this fall. More information will be available on this physician closer to the start date.

In High Level, a new pediatrician is in the community.

Dr. Lida Atarod is providing care at the Northwest Health Centre. She joins a group of seven family medicine physicians to provide care services in High Level and surrounding areas.

AHS is continuing to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs.

McLennan is in a different health situation, with no providers being added recently to their healthcare centre but locum coverage is secured while doctors take a break.

Residents in and around McLennan have been reassured there will be adequate health care coverage while doctors are away.

McLennan has dealt with multiple physician shortages at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre in 2021.
