A former locum physician will be added permanently to the Fort Vermillion community very soon.

Dr. Barend Jacobus De Klerk has been serving the communities of La Crete and Fort Vermilion since 2005 and recently accepted a full-time permanent position in Fort Vermilion.

Dr. De Klerk earned his medical degree and completed his residency training at Pretoria University in South Africa. He has a keen interest in farming and Dr. De Klerk and his wife enjoy spending time outdoors exploring hiking trails. Dr. De Klerk and his wife also have four grown children.

MLA for Peace River, Dan Williams says the province knows healthcare is an integral service and has been working to attract skilled professionals to rural communities. “I’m grateful Dr. De Klerk has accepted this full-time position and is committed to ensuring area residents have lasting access to primary care.” said Williams.

Interim Associate Zone Medical Director for AHS North Zone, Dr. Mark Forder spoke on Dr. De Klerk being apart of the Fort Vermillion community for over 15 years, being an integral part of the team. “It’s important everyone has access to a family physician, no matter where they live, and Dr. De Klerk’s permanent position will provide stability and continued access to local healthcare services for Fort Vermilion and area residents.”
