Northern Sunrise County Wildfire Update
PWF 038 (CNRL fire) is now considered as Being Held at 6,129ha with containment on the entire
perimeter. Resources previously assigned to this fire are now assigned to SWF 068 (Peavine &
Harmon Valley Fire).
SWF 068 (Peavine & Harmon Valley Fire) is still considered as Out of Control at 119,985ha and is now
43% contained. Progress on the containment of SWF 068 (Peavine & Harmon Valley Fire) is ongoing.
Operational focus is containment of the entire perimeter. This may include different strategies such as
extinguishment by crews, use of dozer guards, use of existing anchors (such as roads, waterways,
breaks in vegetation), and controlled burn operations to eliminate hazard vegetation areas along the fire
perimeter.
The western flank of the fire that previously threatened the Harmon Valley area is now protected with
dozer guards and confirmed extinguished lines. Rapid and successful progress is being made on the
northern flank (south of Cadotte Lake, Woodland Cree First Nation, Little Buffalo and the southern flank
(north of McLennan, to Peavine) of the fire. The eastern flank is also actively being worked on.
Recent precipitations has calmed the fire behaviour and intensity, which has given the opportunity for
wildfire crews and equipment to work on the fire in close proximity.
Over the coming weeks, and perhaps even months, the fire will continue to consume unburned
vegetation within the containment area of the fire, even after it is considered under control. It will be
normal to see light and heavy smoke as well as flames within this perimeter. Residents and industry
should still remain vigilant in their day-to-day activities and watch for extension of the fire outside of the
established perimeter.
If you see fire threatening property or that has breached the containment area, call 310-FIRE.
Resources assigned to SWF068 include a 50-person Incident Management Team, 41 pieces of heavy
equipment, several helicopters, 165 wildland firefighters. County fire resources are available at the
request of the Management Team in the event structures become threatened.
Due to the reduced threat to County residents, Wildfire Updates will only be provided by Northern
Sunrise County if there is new or developing threats to residents.
