NPHL Rangers To Go To Senior AA Provincials

The season isn’t over quite yet for the NPHL’s Spirit River Rangers, as they will be going to the Senior AA Provincials.

Team President Jim Nicholson says after other teams declined to go, they decided to take the opportunity to attend.

“In the finals right now we have Dawson Creek and Falher. Falher had the first option of going to provincials and they opted out so we were next in line. When we heard the news, I think our players felt that the season ended too quick and when we heard that we were eligible for provincials, we got a very strong yes coming from our players and our coaching staff.”

The Rangers lost in seven games to Dawson Creek in the second round of the playoffs.

The last time an NPHL team went to Provincials was in 2013. The tournament for this year will start on April 6 in Wainwright.

Nicholson says they’re hoping that more NPHL teams will participate in the future.

“We are considering putting in a bid in for next year to host provincials here. We’ll experience the provincials in Wainwright this year, talk to the organizers there to get an idea of what’s all involved. It has happened here before (in 2012), we’ll see if we can make it happen again.”
