NWJHL Teams Preparing For Regular Season

The hockey season is back in the Peace Country with teams in the NWJHL having their training camps this weekend.

Teams weren’t able to play many games last year because of the pandemic and Fairview Flyers head coach and GM Lance Wiebe says recruiting players for this season has been tougher.

“Some kids have found different things to do and aren’t overly excited about hockey, maybe they’re focused on their careers and different things. I think all over, everybody is reevaluating how they’ve done their recruiting and what they’re looking at for players. It’s an unfortunate change but we’re working our way through it.”

Despite that, Wiebe says his team will continue to have the same style of play they had before.

“We’re going to have a fairly good core of returning guys again, so the big part will be just incorporating the new players into what we’ve built with our returning guys. Our style isn’t going to change a whole lot, we’re just going to continue plugging down that road.”

Several teams will play pre-season games in High Level and La Crete next weekend before the regular season starts on September 24. The Flyers will be on the road that night in Sexsmith before playing their home opener on September 25 against the North Peace Navigators.
