While residents in Watino are back home after being evacuated over the weekend, officials are still monitoring the water levels in the Smoky River.

Birch Hills County CAO Rick Bastow says a local road in the county is closed right now after getting damaged during the flood.

“We’re now looking at solutions to be able to restore that transit link. We’re continuing to monitor things and we recognize that as the water levels have receded, to make sure we understand what the situation on the ground looks like and be able to take any additional necessary precautions that are required.”

Bastow says they got a lot of cooperation from residents in the area when the evacuation took place.

“We had a very good, positive experience in working with our resident partners and working with our other partners through the province and related agencies. It was a very orderly environment, I have nothing but great appreciation to our volunteers.”

Residents in Watino had to evacuate on Friday afternoon, the order was lifted on Sunday morning.
