Peace Regional Victim Services has received a $17-thousand dollar grant from the RCMP for their “Healthy Relationships” campaign. The campaign is dedicated to bringing awareness on how to have healthy family relationships to schools across the region through interactive presentations. This year the program will be focused on Indigenous students between grades 7 and 9.

The regional coordinator for the Peace Regional Victim Services, Brian Turpin, says “we do presentations on what is a healthy relationship and what is.” They will focus on how to have healthy relationships with family members, caregivers and peers. The program will be rolled out in the fall and will be brought to schools in Peerless Lake, Trout Lake, Loon River, Little Buffalo, Woodland Cree, Cadotte Lake and Duncan’s First Nation.

Turpin says the program is dedicated to spending a day with the students to help them learn how to engage in healthy relationships. He explains, “we like to go in and do a very interactive presentation with the students in the day. We have a lot of success and a lot of very positive feedback from students. It’s been a fun day and a very educational day.”

Each year the campaign targets different schools to make sure students know how to engage in healthy relationships. This year the focus is on Indigenous communities to ensure that they they are getting equal access to these resources. Turpin wants to remind everyone that family or domestic violence permeates across every culture or ethnic group across the province and the country.

There are no specific dates at this time for when the campaign will begin or what dates they will be visiting the schools.
