Councillors for the Town of Peace River were smiling after a decision was made last night.

Council voted unanimously to transfer ownership of the Al Adair Recreation Centre on the southeast side of the town to the Sagitawa Friendship Society.

Before the vote was done, each councillor has their chance to express their thoughts on the deal.

Most expressed happiness that the society will be getting a larger location and that an asset that has become obsolete to the town can now serve a purpose.

Community Services Director, Tanya Bell told council that the Sagitawa group was the only one to come forward with a proposal for the town.

The Trending 55 Newsroom reached out to the society to get its thoughts on acquiring the building but were still processing the news and not ready to provide a comment just yet.

According to the note in front of council, Sagitawa is looking to move all its programs under one roof, such as the Ground Level Youth Centre, and its Out of the Cold program.

Had council decided to hang onto the property, there as an estimate of $500,000 to $750,000 for asbestos remediation and the demolition.

The expected sale of the land was estimated to bring in anywhere between $125,000 and $250,000.
