The Peace River Community Health Centre is getting around $2 million medical device reprocessing renovations and upgrades.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro made the announcement in Peace River and says this will allow the hospital to do more surgeries.

“Having centres like Peace River being a part of the surgical initiative and catching up, I think we still have 40,000 surgeries that ended up being postponed because of COVID, 15,000 left with 95% of them booked. Peace River’s going to be a big part of making sure we can catch up, plus making sure we’re following through on a campaign commitment to having all surgeries in window by 2023-24.”

Shandro says this announcement is part of the Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program to complete infrastructure projects over the next three years at rural health care facilities.

Peace River MLA Dan Williams says this is another example of the province investing into improving health care access in the region.

“This tells a story that rural Alberta is important for access to health. Because of these investments, Albertans who live in these communities can ask themselves, will I get the healthcare I need?, the answer will be yes because we’re continuing to make investments on the ground, concrete investments in the health of Albertans. It’s going to make when folks feel the question do I have that support, the truth is we do.”
