Subject: PowerSchool Data Breach

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you about a recent data breach involving PowerSchool, the student information system used by the Fort Vermilion School Division (FVSD) and many other school divisions across North America. On December 28, PowerSchool experienced a cybersecurity incident in which student and staff information was accessed and stolen.

PowerSchool has assured all impacted divisions that the breach has been contained and that the stolen data has been securely deleted. FVSD was informed of the breach on January 7 and immediately began working to identify the specific information that was accessed.

At this time, we can confirm that the compromised student data includes:

  • Student names
  • Birthdates
  • Parent provided student medical and guardianship notes

This incident has affected numerous schools and school divisions across North America. We are collaborating with PowerSchool and other organizations to determine the full scope of the breach and ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent future incidents.

We understand the importance of safeguarding student information and are committed to keeping you informed as we learn more. In the meantime, we encourage families to monitor their personal information and report any unusual activity to the relevant authorities.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school division Central Office at 780-927-3766.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation.
