A renewed agreement between the provincial and federal governments will continue to provide money for community infrastructure.
Ric McIver, Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, says the agreement encourages municipalities to consider housing needs for their infrastructure priorities.
“It’s designed to help some with building of homes. Right across Alberta we very much have a housing shortage. There’s also water, wastewater and all kinds of other things. Municipalities have a lot of needs. Most of them are provided for within the flexibility now that we’ve renegotiated the original terms. I think every municipality will be able to find more than one thing that they need this money for.”
McIver says municipalities can use the funding for a variety of purposes, but the agreement encourages communities to consider housing needs.
“The housing needs can be everything from the housing themselves. When you have a new housing subdivision for example, you need more water treatment, more wastewater treatment, construction of new roads, pipes in the ground, wires in the ground or in the air to service all these new residential developments. The Canada Community-Building Fund is designed to encourage this.”
Each local government in Alberta will receive a base amount, with the majority of funding allocated based on population.
