The Peace River School Division is now offering another online option for learning; for younger students. The new At-home Online Learning Program is designed for students in Grades 1-9 in the 2021-22 school year.

Feedback from around 100 PRSD teaching staff in an internal survey strongly indicated significantly lower engagement levels with online learning as well as challenges experienced among students, but some children thrived with at-home learning during the pandemic.

There are two teachers that have been hired centrally to support the programming; one for Grades 1-6 and one for Grades 7-9. Under the supervision of the PRSD District Principal; the two teachers will provide instruction and support students enrolled in the At-home Online Learning Program.

Regular in-classroom teachers will not be responsible for providing online learning in addition to in-person classes unless the pandemic changes and the government directs schools to return to virtual instruction, or when students temporarily have to self-isolate because they are a close contact of a positive case.

Even with this new programming, PRSD is hopeful students will continue to register for in-class learning with their classmates at their local school.

The general expectation for requests to register in the At-home Online Learning Program is to be directed to the principal of the school your child normally attends, is prior to the school year starting and not requested later than the end of September. If the request is after September, consideration will be case-by-case at the discretion of the school principal. If the request is approved, it will be forwarded to the PRSD District Principal for final approval to join the program, as there are limited spots.

Students need to have high-speed internet and enough bandwidth to participate in Google Meet video conference sessions and the school where the student is registered will supply the student with a touchscreen Chromebook.
