Some schools in the Fort Vermilion School Division have received an exemption from the province’s chief medical officer to not have wearing masks mandatory.

Superintendent Mike McMann says they’ve been working for the past two and a half months on a plan to get more physical distancing in their schools and thus some schools not needing the mandatory masks.

“We did that piece all with the plans and then took it out to communities. Basically communities themselves chose to add the masking back in. Our plan was to not to have any masks at any of our schools, it’s not like certain schools were selected.”

McMann says they received a lot of community feedback when putting together their plan

“Communities themselves are happy I believe with the plan that they have. You might hear a little bit of rhetoric on social media between communities, but as a superintendent I don’t really pay much attention to the rhetoric between communities. I think everyone needs to stay in their own lane.”

McMann adds that even with some schools not having mandatory masks, they’re still following other recommendations on cleaning and sanitizing their facilities.

Hill Crest Community (K-9), Buffalo Head Prairie (K-9), Sandhills Elementary (K-3), Ridgeview Central (4-6), La Crete Public (8-12) and Bluehills Community (K-12) are the schools that are exempt from the mandatory mask requirements.
