  1. In Fairview, the Waterslide at the Aquatic Center is now back open. Also the Stairs renovation has been complete at the pool.
    In the meantime, the Health Professional Enhancement Committee has a scholarship available for students and adults interested in a medical-related program.
    The bursary is for residents in Fairview, Hines Creek, the MD of Fairview or Clear Hills County.
  2. In High Level, Councillor Jan Wilkie has been appointed to sit on the board of the Provincial Government’s Regional Advisory Council.
  3. The Provincial Government is earmarking an additional $8 million dollars for homeless shelters across the Province.
    The now-$116 Million Dollars for shelters will have an addition of spaces in nine rural communities.
  4. The provincial government is making major changes to auto insurance, including rate hikes and switching to a predominantly no-fault claims model.
    Under the new system, car accident victims won’t be able to sue the party responsible for their injury and instead, insurers would pay compensation at rates set by the government.
  5. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pausing the GST and popping cheques in the mail for millions of Canadians.
    For two months starting mid-December, the federal government plans to remove the GST on restaurant meals and dozens of consumer goods, including grocery store snacks, beer and wine, children’s clothing, video games, puzzles, toys and Christmas trees.
    Also part of the plan are $250 rebate cheques for 18.7 million Canadians who earned $150,000 or less last year.
  6. The Alberta government is forecasting a $4.6-billion surplus this fiscal year, but Finance Minister Nate Horner says Alberta’s in for a “challenging” future.
    The government’s second-quarter fiscal update says just $2.9 billion of that surplus is expected to be cash, which would be split between paying down debt and the Heritage Savings Trust Fund.

  14. Snow is in the Forecast for tonight and tomorrow in the Northwest. 10-15 cm is expected in the Peace and Big Lakes, starting late this evening.
    Around 5 cm is expected in the Mackenzie, starting just before dawn. Temps are steady between -15 and -20 with Wind Chills added, until the snow stops on Sunday.
    Skies will clear up the beginning of the week.
