  1. The Peace River School Division has appointed Dr. Jeff Thompson as Superintendant of Schools.
    Thompson took over from Adam Murray last month, after Murray left for Yellowknife.
  2. West Fraser in High Level has donated two thermal imaging cameras to the High Level Fire Department, to aid in efforts.
    West Fraser and Tolko in town have been generous supporters of the authorities in the past. (Interview in separate story)
  3. Police in the Peace Region are asking residents to be vigilant regarding Mail theft this Christmas season.
    61 cases last December, and 90 cases this past January were reported to the RCMP.
    Authorities are asking people to keep tips in mind, like keeping items out of sight, tracking shipments, and to not send cash or other payments through the mail.
  4. With the Canada Post strike nearing four weeks, the postal service says it doesn’t see an end in sight.
    Earlier this week the Canadian Union of Postal Workers sent over its latest list of proposals, which include wage gains and job protections.
  5. Danielle Smith says her goal at the Western Governors’ Association meeting in Las Vegas is to make Alberta’s case and promote a strong Canada-U.S. trade relationship.
    It’s an association under stress as incoming U.S. President Donald Trump says he plans to impose 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian goods when he takes office next month.
  6. Canada’s central bank has cut interest rates for the fifth consecutive time as the country’s economy grows at a slower rate than projected.
    The 50-basis-point cut comes as Canada’s economy grew by 1% in the third quarter of 2024, and the fourth quarter is looking weaker than projected.
  7. Two games in the NHL tonight… Anaheim is in Ottawa, and the Rangers are in Buffalo.
  8. The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired all-star second baseman Andres Gimenez in a trade with Cleveland.
    Infielder Spencer Horwitz went the other way in the deal, and Cleveland subsequently traded him to Pittsburgh.
    The Jays also signed relief pitcher Yimi Garcia as a free agent, reaquiring him after he was traded to Seattle back in July.
  9. Olympic Swimmer Summer McIntosh has won the Northern Star Award as Canada’s top athlete.
    McIntosh won three gold medals at the Olympics in Paris, becoming the first Canadian to win three gold medals at a single Olympics.
  10. Mostly cloudy skies are in store for the Mackenzie and Big Lakes today. The Big Lakes will also get some snow. The Peace will see the sunshine in spots this afternoon.
    Highs are around -10, with not much change in the digits tonight. Friday will be the pleasent day, but after that numbers gradually cool towards the -20’s as highs next week.
