The Town of Peace River and the County of Northern Lights will be observing Fire Prevention Week from October 7th until October 13th. They are working in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association on this year’s campaign, “Look, Listen, Learn.”

The town of Peace River’s fire chief, Tim Harris, breaks down this year’s campaign by saying that “people need to look for places in their home that can be a fire hazard and take care of them, listen to the sound of the smoke alarm as you could only have a few minutes to escape safely once an alarm sounds. We need to learn two ways out of a room. It’s a good idea to sit with your family and make a fire escape plan, so we can have two ways out of every room and make sure all your doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.”

Harris says that it’s also a good time of year to check your alarms and change your batteries. He  says that it is good to clean your alarms by giving them a light vacuum, this also helps with the functioning of your system.

On Saturday October 13th, the Town of Peace River and the County of Northern Lights will be holding an open house and pancake breakfast at the Town of Peace River’s fire hall. The event will run from 9am to 1pm. They will have lots of fire safety information, a fire truck demonstration and excavation, fire extinguisher demonstrations and the chance to practice with fire extinguishers. Sparky the fire dog will also be in attendance
