Viersen And Tories Raising Concerns Over Line 5

Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen and the Conservatives are wanting to see the federal government get involved to prevent the cancellation of Enbridge’s Line 5.

The pipeline runs from Edmonton to Sarnia, Ontario and goes through the state of Michigan, where the governor there has threatened to cancel the permit for it to operate.

Viersen says there’s a treaty between Canada and the US that can be enforced in this situation, the Transit Pipelines Treaty.

“We have a treaty that says that pipelines that run through either of our countries that originate in one country and go back to the same country, originally it was signed because of a pipeline that ran from Alaska to the other states. That was important and it was an American initiative.”

Viersen says not only are thousands of jobs at stake, but it would also cause fuel shortages in Eastern Canada.

“Most of the fuel, jet fuel, home heating oil and all that kinds of stuff that goes to Southern Ontario comes through that pipeline. Not only are the jobs affected, but also people won’t be able to get fuel for their cars and home heating oil and that sort of thing.”
