Viersen – Tories Frustrated By Parliament Suspension

Peace River-Westlock MP Arnold Viersen says he’s frustrated by the continued suspension of Parliament.

He says while the party’s not against the extension of the CERB benefits, they would like to see more accountability from the federal government on the financial situation.

“We would like the government to bring a fiscal update, we’d like the government to table a budget, we’d like to know what’s going on. With the “fake Parliament” that’s going on right now, we get to ask questions and perhaps receive some answers, but even those answers are not necessarily forthcoming.”

While the Prime Minister says there will be a “fiscal snapshot” delivered on July 8, Viersen says there won’t be as much clarity as a normal fiscal update.

“He is completely re-writing the rules of Parliament and insisting on doing that in every case. He’s not going to provide us with a fiscal update which is a normal and standard procedure of the House of Commons. He’s going to do something new and novel which he can hide all kinds of things in because we aren’t necessarily familiar with how to interpret those documents.”

Parliament has been suspended since mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
