Peace River MLA Dan Williams says he’s endorsing former finance minister Travis Toews in the UCP leadership race.

Speaking with the Trending 55 Newsroom, Williams says he’s backing Toews because of the work he did as a minister.

“I don’t want an amateur or somebody coming in who has not had the experience to deal with what is probably one of the biggest challenges we’ve seen in Alberta since the 1980s. I think that is incredibly important that we have a steady hand at the wheel, someone with principled conservative values and I’ll add that he’s from the Peace country and I think that it’s so important to have somebody who has lived their whole life in the Peace country.”

Williams says there’s several things in Toews’ background that he believes makes him the best fit to lead the province.

“I think he has what we need to be successful in Alberta, to stand up for Alberta, to get us a fair deal when it comes to Ottawa and Justin Trudeau, to tackle this big question of inflation in Alberta, I think he’s the right guy for that and I think he can keep our conservative family together, whether you’re in downtown Calgary or far west Northern Alberta.”

Toews lives in the Beaverlodge area and has been the MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti since 2019.
