A classic slasher is back at it again.
I know what you did last summer is a “soft” reboot or sequel, similar to how the latest Ghostbusters have been. We follow a new cast of characters, and we find out what they did last summer. They witnessed a car accident. Instead of reporting it, which might have gotten them in trouble, they hid it and vowed secrecy until a year later. Now, someone has started hunting them down because of what happened. Characters return from previous entries to try and help them and give advice while trying not to get too involved themselves.
First off, I gotta say the soundtrack is very good. The movie opens with some licensed music to set the mood, and it totally works, making the scene feel just right. There are a few other moments where songs are used, especially during more of the lighthearted and fun moments, that I thought were really well done, and now a few of them are on my personal playlist.
The setting of Southport, I love. It’s this small beachside town that has undergone changes since the last time we’ve seen it. Now it’s almost a beachside paradise. But as we know, when things are too good to be true, something always goes amiss.
Now on to the meat and potatoes, I thought it was a decent horror movie. It had some twists and turns in the plot and many tense moments where you’re hoping they survive. I also loved that they just weren’t afraid to just off people, it made it that much more tense because you didn’t know if they would survive. I thought the reveal at the end was fun, and there were quite a few good one-liners that stuck with me.
The deaths were sometimes gruesome, but meant to be explicit and send a message because that was always the goal of the killer.
Overall, if you are looking for something scary this summer, I Know What You Did Last Summer will do the trick, or if you are a fan of the franchise, you will probably want to go check this one out.
