In a decisive move, Alberta’s health-care workers, including licensed practical nurses and health-care aides, have voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action.

Announced today at the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) headquarters in Edmonton, President Sandra Azocar revealed that 98% of members supported the strike mandate.

Out of 15,650 eligible members, approximately 11,030 participated in the five-day vote that commenced on October 30.

Azocar emphasized that the results, pending certification by the Alberta Labour Relations Board, reflect workers’ frustration over stagnant wages and unsafe working conditions affecting both staff and patients.

The union is prepared to serve a 72-hour strike notice as early as November 17.

Before any job action, AUPE and Alberta Health Services are scheduled to engage in mediated negotiations from Thursday through Sunday.
