Alberta’s rapid population growth has led to a significant increase in student enrollment, particularly in francophone schools.
To address this, the provincial government is investing $2 million to assist Alberta’s four francophone regional school boards in pre-planning 20 potential future school projects.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides emphasized importance of this initiative, stating, “To meet the challenge of growing student numbers, we are building schools now and supporting school boards as they prepare for the future. This investment is a crucial starting point for new school developments and will help francophone students continue to thrive in excellent learning spaces.”
The funding will support early planning activities such as site identification and community engagement, ensuring that new schools are strategically located to serve Alberta’s expanding francophone student population.
Infrastructure Minister Martin Long highlighted the proactive nature of this approach, noting that the investment allows planning to start early so students get the schools they need, close to home.
This initiative reflects Alberta’s commitment to providing quality education and accommodating the needs of its diverse and growing communities.
