Local Waterways on rebound from drought: Province

After several dry years and El Niño-induced warm, dry winters, early 2026 brings promising news for Alberta’s water resources.

Recent data indicates that precipitation levels are replenishing moisture across the province.

Most mountain snowpack sites report above-normal levels, marking the most favorable conditions since early 2022.

Environment Minister Grant Hunter stated, “This is great news for our farmers, businesses, communities, and all Albertans who use and rely on water each and every day.”

Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson added, “I’m optimistic that early moisture indicators paint a positive picture for the 2026 growing season.”

The February water supply outlook forecasts river volumes exceeding those of 2025, with the Milk River basin expecting normal volumes, and the North Saskatchewan and Red Deer River basins anticipating above-normal levels.

Major reservoirs in southern Alberta are also reporting healthy storage levels.

These developments offer a hopeful outlook for Alberta’s water supply and agricultural prospects in 2026.
