One of the biggest voices against Alberta separation has come from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.
The nation has filed a legal challenge against the provincial government on actions it says allowed for the approval of a separatist petition.
Chief Sheldon Sunshine says the approval of the petition is a violation of treaty rights.
“We’ll take any steps within our means to oppose those violations, whether it’s legal or what have you. It is something that affects not only First Nations, but it affects all Albertans and all Canadians. To allow a petition to go forward that has significant impacts on everybody, we have to take those steps.”
Bill 14 was passed by the provincial government in the fall which removed the requirement for a referendum question to align with the Constitution.
Sunshine says many other First Nations have supported them in their stance.
“When it comes to the regular Albertans, we’ve got a lot of positive feedback as well. A lot of Albertans feel that they don’t have a voice when it comes to some of these changes that the provincial government are introducing. It provides an avenue for them to show support because this not only affects first nations, this affects everybody.”
