Peace River Council Adopts Political Neutrality Policy for Town Spaces

peace-river-jpg-47
At its February 13 meeting, Peace River Town Council approved a new directive restricting political activities in municipally owned facilities. The move comes amid rising political engagement at all levels of government and aims to ensure publicly funded spaces remain welcoming and neutral for all residents.
Under the directive, Town facilities — including parking lots, entrances and adjacent roadways — cannot be used for public political events, campaigning, fundraising, or promoting or opposing candidates or ballot questions in municipal, provincial or federal elections. Private meetings without open public access may still be booked, provided no campaign materials are displayed outside the rented space.
Town Councillors, MLAs and MPs may rent facilities under the same terms as the public, but not for campaigning or fundraising. No town halls or similar events hosted by elected officials will be permitted within three months of an election. Official election bodies, including Elections Alberta and Elections Canada, are exempt to allow the use of facilities as voting stations.
Administration said the directive will be included in rental agreements and booking information. Staff will vet political-related booking requests to ensure compliance, supporting Council’s goal of maintaining neutrality and keeping Town spaces inclusive for the community.
