First Nations Chiefs vote non-confidence in Provincial Government

In a historic move, the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs, representing Alberta’s Treaty 6, 7, and 8 First Nations, has unanimously passed a vote non-confidence in Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party government.

The Chiefs cite the government’s failure to uphold Treaty obligations and its promotion of separatist rhetoric, which they claim fosters division and undermines the foundational relationship First Nations and the Crown.

Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi of Treaty 8 stated, “The UCP has repeatedly demonstrated to all Treaty people that it does not have the capacity to responsibly navigate the political instability resulting from the chaos Danielle Smith has created.”

The Assembly is now urging members of the Alberta Legislature, including the NDP and independents, to initiate an official vote of non-confidence against the current government.
