The Town of High Prairie is receiving support from Big Lakes County for two major infrastructure projects in 2026. will contribute up to an estimated $686,000 in 2026 toward two major infrastructure projects in the Town of High Prairie. Council approved an estimated $686,000 funding contribution at its February meeting.
The projects and costs in question are: $2.47 million going towards support for a new gas supply line and $1.33 million for engineering work for a water weir and reservoir expansion.
The funding is provided under the Inter-municipal Collaboration Framework agreement, which allows the County to cover up to 50% of eligible capital costs.
High Prairie CAO David Joy said the new gas line is vital to prevent potential winter shortages. Prairie River Gas Co-op has warned it may not be able to supply the south feeder station during extreme cold, raising the risk of a community wide outage if the main line fails.
Joy said engineering work on a weir and reservoir expansion on the West Prairie River is also urgent due to less reliable river flows. The town has applied for a grant that could cover up to 70% of project costs.
