The latest updates on the bridge repair project, tax rates, spring breakup response and retail growth opportunities were among the topics discussed during the May 11 Town of Peace River Council Meeting and May 4 Governance and Priorities Meeting.

Representatives from Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors provided an update on the bridge repair project, noting construction has resumed following a pause. The resumption involves significant local participation, with Ardy Rigging of Valleyview being the main contractor along with other local businesses being utilized. The project completion timeline remains forecast for fall 2027.

Council also passed the 2026 Tax Rate Bylaw, which includes a 1.90% increase. Tax notices are scheduled to be mailed May 21, with payments due June 30.

Administration reported the community’s spring melt and river break up response cost approximately $203,000 due to elevated ice jam and flood risks. The total includes a month-long preparation period and emergency response measures.

Council also reviewed its Retail and Services Gap Analysis. Peace River was identified as a strong regional service hub supporting an estimated trade area population of 25,000 people. The report estimates trade area consumer spending at $437 million and points to opportunities for future growth, especially in areas such as grocery and specialty foods, restaurants, home goods, and fashion and beauty.

In addition, council discussed next steps for the proposed new Town Hall building at 9715 100 Street. Planning drawings are being pursued, though no financial commitments for renovations have been made at this time.
